This violin uses naturally air dried tonewoods (of at least 18 years) from the Russian mountains. Because of the proximity of these mountains compared with our workshop in Beijing, the cost is much lower than tonewood from Europe, yet the growing conditions of these tonewood is very much similar to those in Europe, giving it comparable tonal qualities. Many musicians have been happy with their Russian violins from us. The straight grains on the top spruce is amplified by the Italian oil varnish that we apply. The inherent good tonal qualities of these woods enables the violin to vibrate freely and project a sweet sound, not equal to an old master violin, but instantly beautiful on the first stroke of the bow. To match the top quality of this violin, we have set it up with Dominant Strings and a French Aubert LUXE A bridge.

What’s unique about this instrument

This violin was initially made for an orchestra soloist. His requirements was to achieve a big projection, while at the same time warm mellow tone. We had the help of a violinmaker in US, who introduced a unique technique to improve the tone of the violin. Apart from tonewood treatment, the internal architecture of the violin also had some changes made according to achieve a certain scientific measurement target. Because of a patent protection, we are unable to review how different it is. But soon after the first few copies were made, this technique was proven to improve the violin in a certain number of ways. We have permission from our violinmaker to make this model as long as we do not review ways in which this violin was made. So here, we hope this special master model can find its way to find a new home in the hands of a professional player. Made with all european tonewood, this violin has influences from Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume’s copy of the Strad Messiah.

This is a master violin by my maker Dan Sun, a small workshop in Beijing.

It is oil varnished, and the varnish is made by one of our client-luthier-supplier in Italy. Even we do not know the exact formula. But we are blessed because of its easy availability to us. The tone is nicely balanced on all 4 strings and responsive. With its good projection, this violin is suitable for solo performances.

We used aged Austrian Spruce and Bosnian Maple for this top level violin. This master level violin achieves many highs in terms of tone. A wonderfully warm, mellow tone, and with the sophistication in tone you would find in an old violin. And the trademark balanced tone evident in all Opera violins. This particular violin is a very fine top quality violin. You can tell that the craftmanship is excellent in all ways. I particularly like the peg workmanship.

This violin is a no nonsense oil-varnished violin suitable for most professionals. Antiquated slightly for that fine touch, it is a violin with a lot of charisma. The market value for this violin easily exceeds USD3000.

Aged all European wood, Italian made varnish, German violin making high standards, exquisite Chinese craftmanship. This violin represents the combination of the best.

This violin is available in both Guarneri and Strad models.

About this violin

Kay Lee is a relatively young violinmaker in her mid 30s and is based in Guangzhou, southern part of China. She has been making violins for over 20 years now, having started in her own family before pursuing formal violinmaking education in France. Her study of violinmaking in France steer her violinmaking towards that part of the city’s history for violinmaking (naturally). This particular model follows a Guarneri pattern and is made to achieve a powerful projection. The varnish is a mixture of oil and natural varnish, with a reddish tint over a yellow ground colour. The front of the violin at the bridge position mimics how the accumulation of rosin powder on the violin over time, something we see in most old violins which has been used for a long period of time. This has become one of her varnishing trademark. The tonewoods used is from the French Alps, with a uniform flamed back maple. This violin features a French resin varnish. A good French Aubert bridge is used together with Dominant strings in the setup to guarantee its master grade performance.

What else is unique about this violin?

The tone of this violin is very bright powerful tone. Instantly responsive. The bass tones as I played it in my hands exhibit very strong and powerful resonance. The violin does not feel to be lazy or muffled like a brand new violin. But rather it performs much like a seasoned violin. The higher notes tend to be on the brighter side. I tried the higher scales and the violin seemed to perform well.

This violin is part of our “Master Violin Makers ” collection. Violins in this collection are made with the highest level of craftsmanship and tone realisation. It is the best violin that can be produced at each of the violinmaker’s workshop. This means if you were to walk into this maker’s workshop physically and asked for the very best violin that can be made, this will be it. And because we represent so many workshops exclusively for online sale, buyers can enjoy an extensive range of master violins at a single place. This has always been our specialty since Day 1.

About this violin

Whenever someone mentions a traditional old violin and its maker, Italy comes to mind, with words like Stradivari and Guarneri being reminded instantly, whose ways of violin-making have become the models for successors. Our master violinmaker JP Zhou seeks to re-create this magic of violins made in the traditional Italian Strad style. The bright orange varnished front with succinct figure projects a hauntingly beautiful violin . Made of all European tonewoods, the grain is dense and straight while the flamed grain on the back is symmetrical and uniform. Fitted with boxwood fittings with a crafted angel adds some uniqueness to the old-styled instrument. The tone of this master grade violin is expected to appreciate with time, just like an old Italian master violin because of the high quality chosen tonewoods and careful craftsmanship paid to tuning of the tonewoods. We’ve fitted it with a French AUBERT bridge and DOMINANT strings.

What else is unique about this violin?

I really love the warm mellow tone of this violin. The high notes is really very pleasant to the ears. It does not sound harsh, as you might expect from new violins. The violin has a powerful projection, yet warm at the same time. The tone is not bright, but warm and slightly dark on the low registers.

About Baroque music and how different it is from classical music

The Baroque ideal is an arch of sound, appropriately well-sustained and well-proportioned. For Baroque music to get airborne, the line must soar. The bow is like the breath of a singer. To quote Donington : “Phrases generally go to a peak note, which is often though not always the highest note, and then relax to a note given away at the end. There is the unit; that much, and no less nor more, is the phrase; and it is for our own musicianship to recognize the fact. Nothing in the notation and nothing in the historical evidence, is going to show us the pattern if our own musicianship does not.” To achieve this, the modern violinist (with modern instrument) would have to slow down the bow, use less of it, and play into the string with the hair a little flatter and near the bridge.

Why are Baroque instruments always so expensive.

Because modern violinmakers no longer makes baroque instruments actively, those who do make them charges a high premium for it. Those customers whom I have spoken with actively will know I’ve spent over 1 year searching to make an accurate copy of baroque instruments. After much experimentation, I’m happy to say our current copy is a rather accurate one. If you open up the cello, you will see that even our bass bar is set differently from traditional modern cello.

Buyers, however, should take note there are many many version of baroque instruments. There’s no real standard for it, only a more commonly available one. Our baroque instruments has been tested and examined by 8 baroque orchestral players from Spain, UK and NY, and has been acceptable by their standards.

Why have we made this violin?
This violin has one of the most unique tone we have heard for a violin, owing to its unique shape. Modern violins are no longer made with this shape after 1900 because of orchestral requirements favouring less overtones and a more focus tone. But the tone of this violin is full and powerful, and has the most colourful overtones. You really have to play it to feel its spirit move through your body. It is certainly a unique experience. We have retain the same varnish as the original to maintain its full flavour, keeping its label as close to the original as possible.

What else is unique about this violin?
If you look at the scroll closely, you will notice it resemble a cello scroll. This really adds to the uniqueness for this violin, which in my opinion gives it added personality, making it a charming instrument to own. People are definitely going to talk about this instrument.

This violin is part of our “Make it good and make it rare” collection, which we limit the number of such violins we make at our workshop so there is very little in circulation. As time goes by, the value of this instrument is expected to appreciate, because it is made a master instrument, using the best wood and by one of our most respected violinmakers in our stable. We hope you will enjoy it.
