Has this violin been sold previously? I am curious why it was made in 2007, but just recently put up for sale.  — Kent

Hi….

nope. We subject the violin to “rest” for some of our higher level instruments.
We also subject it to tonewood tuning using loudspeakers for extreme high
and low notes, in our sound chambers. This gives the violin better response
and allow the violin to break in quickly. So when the player picks it up, it no
longer sound like a new violin.

Hi Jehpin,

we tried out the first three Vecchio violins that have arrived here, I hope the remaining ones will arrive before Wednesday next week.

Let me say that I’m delighted with the general quality of both sound and craftsmanship. The antique finish of the “old Italian” and “19th century French” models is expertly done, certainly as good as any that I’ve seen from China. You could really these are old violins. The glossier finish of the straight oil varnish is certainly less distinctive, but no less well done.

The sound character of all three violins is very similar, about what I expect of very compactly built violins with good arching of the body: sweet e-string sound, generally good projection and a characterful g-string, good balance overall. The antiqued ones have a touch of “boxiness”, which is not unlike old violins and suits the character. Violin players keep telling me that a little bit of boxy sound is more comforatble on the ear of the player. Very nice on the whole, very stable quality – I would suggest to my customers that the level is about that of experienced hobby players and advanced students. Very easy to play, too!

I’m naturally looking forward to receiving the remaining ones – and more!

Best regards, Thomas

Good quality small size student triangular cases are rare in China. Most of the triangular cases are simple foam cases with parts that rust quickly and the foam used are inferior.

Here are  2 BRICKS cases Carrier and Reflex are designed by customers themselves for their existing student kits. Currently these cases are bought by many shops (some even large wholesalers) for their own China violins.

I can ship these cases to designated address worldwide including within China. I do this often for customers who have their violins made elsewhere in China but have difficulty or do not have the time to source for good quality cases in China.

  • the type you see with student violin everywhere (no photos shown here) USD10
  • BRICKS Carrier (red colour case)
  • BRICKS Reflex (black canvas with netted exterior case. Has reflective strips on cases.)

Buying a 1/8 Violin for Your Child

Hi Jehpin,

I am looking for a 1/8th size violin for my baby girl,

what do you recomend and what is a reasonable price for a child to start learning.

——— Reply ———-

Hi

actually in my opinion, the better choice would be to rent one violin from your local store,
or buy one which allows you to trade back in future for a larger violin.

This is because at this point of time, you will get better value with a used violin. A used
violin is also easier to play because the tone is already broken in. Most 1/8 violin are just
average in quality anyway. And they don’t differ much from one another.

The move from 1/8 to 1/4 could be quite soon also so you may have to change it before you
know it.

Once your girl reaches 1/2 size then you can consider buying one. As at that time, she
could be an average player, or a prodigy in the making. And only then will she have enough
skills to harness the qualities of a better violin.

Hope this helps,
Jehpin

Opera Guarnerius Cannone Violin (Master Level)

Description
This is a reproduction of the Guarneri del Gesu’s Cannone violin in 1742 by my maker Dan Sun, a small workshop in Beijing. This violin is also called the Cannon violin by some. The most outstanding feature of this violin is the antiquating techniques and the impressive cracked marks. It is oil varnished, and the varnish is made by one of our client-luthier-supplier in Italy. Even we do not know the exact formula. But we are blessed because of its easy availability to us.

The tone is nicely balanced on all 4 strings and responsive. With its good projection, this violin is suitable for solo performances.

We used aged Austrian Spruce and Bosnian Maple for this top level violin. This master level violin achieves many highs in terms of tone. A wonderfully warm, mellow tone, and with the sophistication in tone you would find in an old violin. And the trademark balanced tone evident in all Opera violins. This particular violin is a very fine top quality violin. You can tell that the craftmanship is excellent in all ways. I particularly like the peg workmanship.

This violin is a no nonsense oil-varnished violin suitable for most professionals. Antiquated slightly for that fine touch, it is a violin with a lot of charisma. The market value for this violin easily exceeds USD3000.

Aged all European wood, Italian made varnish, German violin making high standards, exquisite Chinese craftmanship. This violin represents the combination of the best.

This model has been updated in 2009 and is available in various woods:

  • Austrian Spruce and Bosnian Maple (highest level)
  • Austrian Spruce and Chinese Maple
  • Carpathian Spruce and Chinese Maple

Options:

  • If you want this violin to be made with Strad body, it is also possible. But this is not a commonly stocked item so contact me for bookings.
  • Red colour or yellow varnish.  See photos below.
  • With or without crack marks. Below are 2 violins to illustrate this.
  • Boxwood are used as default fittings. Other fittings upon request.

Violas
Also available in violas 15-17 inches.

For bookings at the workshop, just drop me an email. Only a limited number of violins will be made each year.
