This is a professional level violin by Beijing violinmaker Wang Wenqing. WHere we see influences of da Salo emblem design. This violin is made using Engelman Spruce, giving the violin a nice full voice. High quality ebony with bone trimmings are used. The violin is oil varnished in seasoned in seasoned brown/amber. The spruce is from Northeast China, known for their hardness, making a good full tone possible. Achieves outstanding projection and volume through a carefully calibrated high archings. Each instrument tonewood is tuned individually to achieve the optimum resonance possible for that piece of wood. The bass of matching density is then used, to ensure the instrument produces a big, brilliant, deep and rich tone. For pros only.

Why have we made this violin?
Violins throughout the 17th and 18th century have all retained many of their flavours. Apart from the dimensions of the violins, many famous violinmakers also included some inscriptions or emblem design on some of the violins they make, especially if it was dedicated to a king or some member of the Royal family. As many of the bidders would know me, I am a great fan of such craftworks so whenever I travel in Europe in search of old violins, I always keep a lookout for such masterpieces. But sometime these violins are kept in museums and they only allowed me to take some detailed photos. From these photos, I seek to recreate the magic of these violin.

There was no original label in the violin I seek to re-create in this model. This violin would have been made for the Royal Household either late in the reign of Charles II (r.1660-1685). This instrument has been attributed to Ralph Agutter,a London maker, who was active at this time. The neck and pegbox are very similar to those belonging to two Agutter violins in private collections, one of which is also carved on the back.

What else is unique about this violin?
The back of the violin is carved from a single piece of maple. The delicate craftworks adds to the uniqueness for this violin, which in my opinion gives it added personality, making it a charming instrument to own. People are definitely going to talk about this instrument. It also plays wonderfully nicely as good quality tonewoods are used. Definitely a keeper.

This violin is part of our “Make it good and make it rare” collection, which we limit the number of such violin we make at our workshop so there is very little in circulation. As time goes by, the value of this instrument is expected to appreciate, because it is made a concert instrument, using some of the best wood and by one of our most respected violinmakers in our stable. Ning & Ivanov is the result of violinmaking collaboration between a Chinese Violinmaker and a Russian Violinmaker. I believe this is the first and only available workshop that is working so close together. Russian violinmaking has a long history, earlier that even many European countries. There are some unique styles in the construction of the violin that the violinmakers has retain strictly as Russian style. Here we are happy to showcase these to you. Right now, the 2 violinmakers are residing in Beijing. We have chosen to retain use Russian spruce and maple. The tone is just exceptional, powerful rich clear tone.

This violin is a good quality 5-strings violin. It has a beautiful finish. The grains of the spruce top is fine grain, with good consistency. The maple chosen is a beautiful two piece back, with a good visibility into the wood grains. You can see the close-ups in the other photos. The sides, neck and scroll are also carefully chosen, and highly flamed. Playing this violin is a pleasure, especially if high note is desired. The extra string on the violin is a wonderful additional for a viola string, adding that extra flexibility and creativity for your music expression. The fingerboard is also made wider than a regular fingerboard, hence your fingers will have the space they need.
